IPSP – Industrial Problem Solving with Physics – is the challenge between physics talents promoted by the Physics Department of the University of Trento.
This year, Polytec was selected as a participating company. For a week, 24 master’s and doctoral students, male and female graduates, and researchers in the field of physics from different universities worked in close contact with the companies participating in the project, finding innovative solutions to their technological development challenges.
The problem proposed by Polytec concerned measuring the temperature of liquid steel in the melting process of electric furnaces; an automated procedure that takes place via an industrial robot that immerses, through a steel lance, a measuring device inside the liquid steel. The objective of the challenge was to study the thermal stresses suffered by the lance, identifying the best material to minimize lance deformation.
Polytec congratulates the group led by Dr. Sebastiano Mariazzi, who was able to best interpret the proposed industrial problem, identifying a solution in the few days available.
The IPSP initiative is an important collaboration tool between the entrepreneurial world and physics research and, above all, it confirms how fundamental this collaboration is to increase the level of innovation not only for the participants but also – and above all – for our territory.
