PRESS RELEASE
Società Gasdotti Italia and Hydroalp together for renewable synthetic methane production
Roma (Italy), February 12, 2025 – Società Gasdotti Italia (SGI), a leading company in the transport of natural gas and in the development of innovative solutions for decarbonisation, has entrusted Hydroalp, a BM Group company specialising in green hydrogen production plants, with the engineering and supply of the methanator for the Pegasus project. The initiative aims to produce 100% renewable methane gas through Power-to-Gas technology, which involves the production of green hydrogen through electrolysis, fuelled exclusively by renewable sources, and subsequent methanation.
The e-NG produced through the combination of green hydrogen and captured CO2 stands out as a sustainable and innovative solution.
The plant will use an innovative process that combines renewable energy, green hydrogen, and captured carbon dioxide (CO2) to produce synthetic methane, a gas with the same chemical and physical properties as natural methane. As a result, the synthetic methane will be able to be fed directly into the existing gas network owned by SGI, without the need for any new investment in facilities or equipment.
“This project represents a great opportunity to put our technological expertise at the service of the national energy transition” – said Giovanni Fornasa, Hydroalp’s Sales Manager – “Thanks to a multidisciplinary technical team, which integrates all the competences of an EPC, we can offer a complete package of services: preliminary and detailed engineering, consultancy, construction, civil and plant engineering, and commissioning of the plants. Our strength is the ability to organise and integrate complex systems into industrial processes, enabling us to transform innovative concepts into operational realities.”
The project benefits from the extensive gas transport network in Italy, one of the most extensive and advanced in Europe. This enables the rapid integration of synthetic methane into existing supply chains, providing an important boost to the development of the green hydrogen value chain, of which synthetic methane is a spin-off.
“Projects like this are evidence of our commitment to supporting a sustainable energy future for the country.” said Gianluca Vollaro, Director of Business Development, Strategy, Regulatory Affairs and Innovation at Società Gasdotti Italia. “With innovative projects like Pegasus, we are writing a new story for energy, a story in which green hydrogen and synthetic methane become the protagonists of the green transition, creating a bridge between the resources of the past and the energies of the future. At SGI, we firmly believe that our work is crucial to ensure Italy’s leading role in the global energy transition”.
E-NG opens up new perspectives for strategic sectors such as mobility and sustainable automotive. Indeed, this fuel provides performances equivalent to natural gas without requiring modifications to existing vehicles or systems. Moreover, its deployment accelerates the adoption of green hydrogen, promoting a virtuous circle towards a fully renewable energy system.

About Società Gasdotti Italia
Società Gasdotti Italia (SGI) is the second-largest natural gas transmission operator in Italy and has been active in the country since the 1960s. SGI offers natural gas transport services through a network of high- and medium-pressure pipelines for about 1800 km, located mainly in Central and Southern Italy. SGI is the first company in Italy to obtain TSO certification for the transmission of energy in the form of natural gas, pursuant to Directive 2009/73/EC. SGI is promoting a number of initiatives for the decarbonisation of its gas infrastructure, including the injection of sustainable gases such as green hydrogen, biomethane, and synthetic methane into the grid. In addition, SGI has embarked on a major digital transformation program to ensure ever higher standards of safety and service reliability.
About Hydroalp
Hydroalp, an EPC contractor in the renewable energy sector, was born in 2015, inspired by the Alps for the values of innovation, sustainability, and integration that they represent. These values can contribute to the sustainable development of energy resources, preserving and enhancing the environment for future generations. Thanks to the long-standing experience and expertise of its technical department, Hydroalp has grown and acquired a prominent position in the market for the construction of turbines and hydropower plants, revamping activities, and maintenance. Thanks to its experience as an EPC, Hydroalp has recently structured itself with a new division specialised in the construction of turnkey plants for the production of green hydrogen. Furthermore, with the acquisition of Al.fa. Impianti, a company with more than thirty years of experience in the production of modular skid systems, Hydroalp has implemented its offer of services and technological expertise, proposing itself as a supplier of plant components related to the management of fluids, gas, biofuel, and innovative fuels (biomethane, methanol, ammonia, and green hydrogen) aimed at the energy, transport, and marine sectors.
The company is part of BM Group, an industrial group headquartered in Borgo Chiese (TN) that combines companies specialising in digital and environmental technologies for industry. BM Group today has more than 350 direct employees located in the various Italian and foreign branches, working within three macro-areas of specialisation: automation, mechatronics, and renewable energy.
